Telin USA announces that the interconnection for the Southeast Asia-US (SEA-US) subsea cable, connecting to Yap Island, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), is now ready for service.

Telin USA is a consortium member in the SEA-US trans-pacific fibre submarine cable system, which connects California, Hawaii, Guam, Philippines and Indonesia.

The new SEA-US interconnection to FSM was built and developed by NEC Corporation, the project contractor. The cable connects Yap Island to Guam via SEA-US with 500Gbps capacity provided by Telin.

The news marks an important milestone in infrastructure connectivity for FSM, an island located in the middle of Pacific Ocean. Prior to the announcement, the island’s internet was supported by satellite and its speed has now doubled due to the use of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology.

The project also enters RFS at the same time as Yap Island hosts thee MicroGames 2018, a Micronesia Olympic games with countries like FSM, Palau, Guam, and Marshall Island.

Back in May of this year, Telin signed an interconnection agreement with FSM to create an interconnection between Palau and Yap Island to SEA-US cable system. The signing was done by Nanang Hendarno, chief technology officer of Telin and chairman of Telin USA; the Secretary of the Department of Transportation, Communication & Infrastructure of the FSM, Luke Weilbacher, and witnessed by the president of FSM, Peter Christian.

SEA-US is a 14,500km subsea cable system, along a unique route and has been designed and engineered to bypass earthquake prone areas in East Asia, thereby providing a strategic diversity in the range of connectivity to trans-pacific networks with increased connectivity stability. The cable system was built by a consortium of 7 global telecommunication companies namely Telin, Globe Telecom, Hawaiian Telecom, GTA, GTI, RTI, and Telin USA.
