Sprint names Néstor Cano in new COO role
Sprint has appointed Néstor Cano to the newly-created role of chief operating officer, reporting directly to CEO Marcelo Claure.
Cano joins from global IT distributor Tech Data, where he was most recently president of European operations, a role he’d held since 2007.
He will take up his position from 2 February and will be tasked with delivering operational excellence, driving expense reductions, and strengthening systems and processes across the business, Sprint said.
“Sprint has already undergone tremendous change and has seen great improvement under Marcelo’s leadership,” Cano said.
“I am excited to join Sprint at this critical time in the company’s turnaround. I am committed to driving focused execution of Sprint’s strategic plan to ensure Sprint remains a strong and relevant competitor in the wireless industry.”
Sprint recently announced an investment in music streaming service Tidal, set up by rapper Jay Z. It has been a challenging few years for the operator, which was surpassed by T-Mobile in terms of mobile subscriptions in 2015.
Claure became CEO 2014 after joining from Brightstar, the distributor he founded which is also owned by Sprint-parent company SoftBank.
