Hurricane Sandy has severe impact on US connectivity

In scenes that made headlines around the world, Hurricane Sandy came ashore on the US east coast yesterday causing major power and internet outages.

The impacts on internet connectivity have been severe, according to Renesys, with several major data centres in Manhattan losing power or suffering flood damage in Broad Street and Whitehall.

Renesys’ own data centre site in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, also experienced multiple power outages.

As a result of outages, Renesys has observed an internet traffic shift away from New York, as carriers “scramble for alternative paths”.

The firm is now assessing the full scale of the damage caused by Sandy and the recovery efforts being undertaken.

This graphic shows the locations of some of the internet outages observed between 3:00am on October 29 and 9:00am on October 30. New York and New Jersey were found to bear the brunt of the damage as the storm progressed.
