SpaceDC’s first Jakarta data centre, which boasts several environmental credentials, has gone live.

Announced in 2019, JAK2 is SpaceDC’s first environmentally friendly facility The 1.45MW data centre is targeted at colocation and wholesale customers and is located on the SpaceDC ID01 data centre campus.

“With Indonesia having SEA’s largest population, and the region’s largest digital economy, it only made sense for us to open our first facility in this market,” said Darren Hawkins, CEO of SpaceDC.

“With the connectivity afforded by this facility, local and global brands will now have access to a world-class data centre facility to connect to the SEA region – a region whose Internet economy has been valued at over US$100 billion, and is expected to swell to US$300 billion by 2025,” Hawkins added.

JAK2’s green credentials focus on energy and heat management to achieve a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.3. Among the green features, the facility utilises thermal wall technology and high efficiency electric air-cooled chillers.

It also boasts its own, environmentally friendly, power supply with a natural gas power generator for larger customers who don’t want to rely on the local grid. The trigeneration onsite power plant is connected to domestic natural gas company Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN). Diesel backup generators will serve needs during power outages and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit has also been installed to lower carbon emission produced by power generation.

Jakarta typically experiences unreliable electricity supply as country wide there is insufficient electrical generation capacity.

“Creating a stable power supply to ensure service continuity was a major consideration for SpaceDC when building a data facility in Indonesia,” Hawkins said. “There are two natural gas pipelines running alongside the site, which means that if there’s a fault in the supply from one, we can divert to the other,” he continued.

Headquartered in Singapore, SpaceDC is backed by the Singapore sovereign wealth fund, GIC.

SpaceDC partners with the Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP), Vertiv, DKSH and MTU Rolls-Royce.
