Eutelsat Communications has entered into a multi-year contract with Orao Telecom Congo for video capacity on one of its satellites.
In addition, Orao telecom Congo has also signed up to Eutelsat CiRRUS; a hybrid satellite-OTT delivery solution enabling broadcasters to offer a seamless content experience across multiple screens.
“We are delighted to embark on our first satellite broadcast venture with Eutelsat as our trusted partner, bringing high quality, original Congolese content to viewers in DRC and further afield,” said François Mbilo Bompate, president of the directors committee at Orao Telecom Congo.
Orao chose a satellite located at one of Eutelsat's key positions to launch a pay-TV bundle of 15 channels featuring Congolese content made up of series, movies, sports, kids shows and news, from mid-December. The direct-to-home (DTH) bundle will be broadcast to the Democratic Republic of Congo, while Orao will also use the Eutelsat CIRRUS content delivery platform to offer an OTT service aimed at the global Congolese diaspora.
"We are proud to have been selected by Orao to launch its new TV offer,” added Philippe Oliva (pictured), chief commercial officer of Eutelsat. “This contract is a reflection both of the unparalleled reach of Eutelsat’s 7° East orbital position over DRC, as well as its compelling portfolio of services and solutions enabling broadcasters to reach viewers worldwide via a satellite/OTT service.”
This summer Eutelsat made a number of changes to its executive committee as well as made an investment in CDN provider Broadpeak. The management restructuring included the appointment of new chief commercial officer, a head of the deployment department and director of development.
As for Broadpeak, the Eutelsat announced a circa 20% investment in the company to advance its strategy to integrate satellite into the IP ecosystem.
