AMS-IX eyes further expansion

AMS-IX outlined plans for further expansion following the launch of its Hong Kong exchange at the end of February.

Cara Mascini, chief of marketing at AMS-IX told Capacity that expansion in China was on the company’s mind but that “it is a very difficult market with a lot of regulatory issues so it is not set that this is the next step”.

Mascini says that the Amsterdam-based exchange has received requests from other parties since rumours of AMS-IX Hong Kong first materialised. These included requests for very local exchanges in particular countries as well as more regional type exchanges.

The Hong Kong exchange presents a different model for AMS-IX and is based on a relationship with Hutchison Global Communications. Hutchison performs the local marketing and sales for the exchange as AMS-IX cannot operate a separate local entity.

Mascini further added that Hutchison fitted the bill as a partner as they have a very small basic local geography of their home market but have always been very internationally focussed.

Singapore was also considered as an option by AMS-IX to set up an exchange, but its well developed local exchange market made it a less feasible option.
