Hibernia clinches deal with Telefónica International Wholesale Services

Hibernia Atlantic will begin supplying connectivity between Europe and the US for Telefónica International Wholesale Services (TIWS).
TIWS, a subsidiary of Telefónica Group that provides global telecoms services for fixed and mobile carriers, ISPs and content providers, has partnered with Hibernia to meet the growing demand for transatlantic capacity from its customers.
Jose Ramon Vela, CEO of Telefonica International Wholesale Services, said the partnership will help provide additional redundancy to Telefonica`s International Backbone, which consists of an IP/MPLS network with PoPs in more than 40 countries. "TIWS looks to advance its network capabilities based upon its clients' growing needs. By working with partners such as Hibernia, we now have increased network scalability backed by high quality performance," he added.
The move builds on a busy period for transatlantic network operator Hibernia. Its network now connects over 120 PoPs across Europe and North America through 24,000km of subsea and terrestrial fibre optic cable. In November, the company conducted a 100G trial with Huawei between Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada and Southport, England, said to be the highest capacity connection to ever be transmitted across the Atlantic Ocean.
Just this week, it also signed a construction contract with Huawei Marine Networks for its Global Financial Network (GFN) called Project Express. The new route will provide connectivity between New York and London using 40G technology with further upgrades to 100G planned in the future.
