Sparkle launches new PoP in NaMex data centre

Sparkle says it is expanding its European backbone with a new point of presence (PoP) in Rome, Italy.

The new PoP is located in NaMeX, the carrier neutral internet exchange and interconnection point, which will serve national and international ISPs and content players as well as network operators. In particular Sparkle will meet its customers growing need for transport solutions adding to Sparkle’s existing proposition for its Tier-1 IP Transit service through its Seabone PoP at the same site.

The company says that by enhancing its backbone it is increasing its competitiveness in Europe because of its close proximity to Sicily Hub, Sparkle’s open ecosystem and marketplace in Palermo. The hub acts as a meeting place for all subsea cables connecting Europe to Africa and Asia because of its unique position in the Mediterranean. In addition, Sparkle’s customers will be able to directly connect to the NaMeX IXP community and its marketplace.

Most recently, Sparkle announced the launch of a new Seabone PoP in Amsterdam. Located in the carrier neutral Equinix AM5 data centre, the new PoP will provide a number of new interconnectivity opportunities. The new location will also attract a number of different types of customers ISPs, content players, cloud operators and IT services companies that all need cost effective, high-performance and low latency solutions.

The Amsterdam PoP will help Sparkle to provide a higher quality internet experience to OTTs, content and service providers and their eyeball customers.

Recently Sparkle’s parent company Telecom Italia (TIM) made headlines at the centre of a dispute between two of its biggest shareholders. The dispute may lead to a completely new board and management team. The Italian telco also notified the Autorità per le Garanzie nelle Comunicazioni (AGCom), that it has officially started the process of separating out its wholesale access network into a new legal entity.
