NEC deploys 10G-EPON solution for KDDI’s FTTH service

NEC Corporation will provision a 10 Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (10G-EPON) system to support KDDI Corporation's fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service.

KDDI’s new service called "au Hikari Home 10 giga" went live on 1 March and gives individual subscribers upstream and downstream speeds of up to 10Gbps.

"The need for high-speed and large-capacity Internet is expected to continue rising with the sophistication and high-definition of content and the increase in mobile data traffic such as Wi-Fi offload. In addition to this 10G-EPON system for KDDI, NEC will continue to work on the development of optical access technologies that support the strengthening of telecommunications carrier services," said Kazuhiro Tagawa, deputy general manager of the network solutions division of NEC Corporation.

The 10G-EPON solution comprises of an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) that will be installed at the site of the telecoms carrier and an Optical Network Unit (ONU) that is installed at the subscriber's premises. The OLT is a 19- inch rack 4U size but still has the capacity to accommodate up to 8,192 ONUs, creating a more efficient space in offices. In addition the ONU has a reduced volume of 65% in comparison to other NEC products, making the installation space on subscriber premises and storage space for telecommunications carriers smaller.

Driven by the demand for high-speed connectivity and increased capacity for HD content and Wifi, NEC says it will continue to develop optical access technologies to enhance the service capabilities of telecommunications carriers.

NEC will showcase the new 10G-EPON solution at the 18th Optical Communication Technology Exhibition in Tokyo on the 4-6 April.  

At the start of the year NEC was at the centre of some controversy when Xtera, a provider of innovative subsea fibre-optic technology, sued NEC and Nokia claiming both firms and their subsidiaries have infringed on its patents.
