Rostelecom considers media acquisition

Russia’s Rostelecom is considering the acquisition of national commercial broadcaster CTC Media, according to local reports.

Vedomosti newspaper today quoted a senior official at Rostelecom, and a person close to a shareholder at CTC Media, as saying that negotiations between the two are at an early stage.

CTC is 38%-owned by Sweden’s MTG, but new ruling in Russia means that CTC will need to reshuffle its ownership structure. The ruling will come into effect in early 2016 and states that foreign stakes in media companies must not exceed 20%.

CTC is reportedly exploring all options, including a sale, and has also sparked interest from the owners of media holding YUTV, Alisher Usmanov and Ivan Tavrin.

In August last year, Rostelecom teamed up with Tele2 Russia to create a mobile joint venture.
