Bharti Airtel launches Africa Connect network

India-based Bharti Airtel has announced the launch of Africa Connect network with the aim of enhancing Africa’s connectivity with the rest of the world.

Africa Connect is designed to enhance data capacity across the continent and operates through a network of integrated fibre and satellite capabilities, with 42 PoPs across 17 African countries.

The network will offer a range of solutions and services, including a suite of global transmission and IP services, including submarine capacity, global leased circuits, Ethernet and backhaul.

In addition, Airtel said it would also provide global and regional IP transit, managed internet, bandwidth on demand and a range of satellite and managed services to enterprises and carriers across Africa.

“Africa Connect is in consonance with our underlying theme to serve the fastest-growing data markets in the world,” said Ajay Chitkara, CEO of Global Business at Bharti Airtel. “Africa is also emerging as an economic hub and we are uniquely poised to connect the continent with the rest of the world and fully serve the growing bandwidth demand.”

The Africa Connect network is supported by infrastructure built by other regional carriers and works with the major subsea cables along the African coast, allowing businesses and enterprises to connect to global hubs.

The network interconnects with Airtel’s landing station in Mumbai.

“With Africa seeing a significant jump in the growth of data and connectivity, this initiative will help us in meeting the bandwidth requirements and diverse needs of our customers,” added Andre Beyers, CMO at Airtel Africa.
