The expansion plans are designed to enable the launch of CWC’s broadband-enabled services portfolio, which includes services such as internet shopping, online education and telemedicine.
CWC trades as The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) in the country, and the company said it will invest $4 million in the upgrade.
The 3,500km Bahamas Domestic Submarine Network International (BDSNi) fibre-optic network connects over 20 islands between New Providence and Haiti, delivering crucial broadband and fixed-line services.
“Though it is unseen, our subsea cable network is a vital part of our ability to provide new products and services across the islands of The Bahamas, which contributes to the social and economic development of our communities,” said Geoff Houston, CEO at BTC.
BTC expects the upgrade to improve network resilience, should any part of the cable be damaged, increase the number of ways it can route telecoms traffic, and deliver faster, more cost-effective broadband to the Bahamian islands.
The upgrade is due for completion at the end of 2014. CWC has been making several other developments in the region, including the launch of an LTE network in the Cayman Islands earlier this month.
