Volta launches London data centre

UK-based Volta Data Centres will officially launch its first central London data centre in Great Sutton Street today.

Kit Malthouse, deputy mayor of London for business and enterprise, will open the data centre, which is reportedly the first of its kind to launch in London for a decade.

“This new data centre is clear evidence of the confidence there is in London’s digital economy,” Malthouse said ahead of the launch.

“By making this investment, Volta is making a serious contribution to the future success of our city,” he added.

Volta’s data centre is located on the edge of the City in London, in close proximity to the financial district, a number of SMEs and the media industry surrounding London’s West End.

The data centre boasts a 33kV power supply from two separate sections of the national grid, making it one of the most resilient data centres in the country, the company said.

“We embarked on this project because we realised that central London has been underserved by adequate data centre capacity and IT infrastructure,” said Matthew Dent, CEO at Volta Data Centres.

“We have made this multi-million pound investment because we believe that London’s financial services, enterprise and media and content industries need to be better served to enable them to compete domestically and internationally.”

The facility has taken a year to refit and renovate and London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, also expressed his support.

“I am delighted Volta has made this significant outlay, which will help create jobs, develop skills and attract further investment to London,” Johnson said.

Capacity met with Julian King, director of Volta Data Centres, earlier this year.
