Telefónica Spain begins LTE roll-out
Telefónica has started deploying its 4G LTE network in Spain, through collaborations with Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson.
The project, estimated to be one of the largest in Western Europe, will see Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson implement LTE infrastructure in 2,200 nodes this year.
Telefónica has invested €627 million in network upgrades this year and expects its LTE network to connect 60 Spanish cities by the end of 2013.
Telefónica will use the 1,800MHz frequency band for the network and Alcatel-Lucent will deliver its turnkey project management services in phase one of the project.
“This is a significant agreement for Alcatel-Lucent and our largest in scope to date in Western Europe,” said Roque Lozano, president of Alcatel-Lucent Spain and global account manager for Telefonica.
“We are ready to further explore wireless technologies down the road, such as small cells to enhance coverage anytime, anywhere and over any device, toward a wider collaboration framework,” Lozano added.
Telefónica partnered with Alcatel-Lucent just a few months ago, when the pair successfully trialled 100, 200 and 400Gbps over an optical network.
