EU suspends TKK pricing plan in Austria

The European Commission yesterday suspended a broadband wholesale pricing scheme from Austrian telecoms regulator, TKK, Reuters reports.

The proposal was designed to allow Austria’s dominant operator, Telekom Austria, to determine what it would charge other operators for use of its broadband infrastructure, but EU regulators believe it to be in breach of EU telecoms regulations.

The commission further believes such a proposal may block future investment in broadband.

“TKK’s proposal must give national and multinational operators the right incentive to replace the old legacy copper network with modern technology, and provide stability and predictability,” said Neelie Kroes, VP of the European Commission, in a statement.

Earlier this year, Kroes put in motion a plan to encourage internet equality across Europe.
