Telefónica Deutschland and Deutsche Telekom extend fixed-line partnership

Telefónica Deutschland has signed a memorandum of understanding to increase its usage of Deutsche Telekom’s domestic fixed-line network.

Telefónica decided to invest in Deutsche Telekom’s fixed-line network as it is set to provide faster speeds than cable network operators in a staged programme which will be completed by 2019, according to Deutsche Telekom.

The German operator will use vectoring technology to increase its network speed. Vectoring is said to enable the German operator to provide end users with speeds of 100Mbps, reportedly doubling present download speed of VDSL.

“Through the cooperation, we can offer them the best fixed-network products in addition to mobile services,” said René Schuster, CEO at Telefónica Deutschland.

“Deutsche Telekom is prepared to make massive investments in Germany's fixed-line network. But we need partners to share investment risks and accelerate the upgrade of high-performance networks," said Niek Jan van Damme, head of Deutsche Telekom's business activities in Germany.

In another agreement, the two companies partnered so Deutsche Telekom would connect Telefónica's mobile communications stations with fibre optics.
