Monaco Telecom partners with Gibtelecom

Cable & Wireless Communications’ subsidiary Monaco Telecom has entered into a strategic partnership with Gibraltar’s Gibtelecom to lease capacity on the Europe India Gateway (EIG) subsea cable.

Gibtelecom will be Monaco’s preferred carrier on the 15,000km EIG system, a $700 million cable linking the UK with Gibraltar, Portugal, Monaco, France, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Oman, the UAE and India.

In return, Monaco Telecom will provide Gibtelecom with the communications capacity to access the European market via Monaco, which is connected to a southern European fibre network.

“Our companies have been able to leverage their mutual trust into a strong long-term partnership. EIG has turned Monaco into a key gateway between Europe and the African and Asian continents. This deal will provide direct and secure access to even more international destinations for our customers and partners. It will further increase Monaco Telecom’s presence in the international data communication market,” said Martin Péronnet, CEO of Monaco Telecom.

Monaco Telecom’s director of carrier services, Richard Faucheux, said that he believes the deal cements Monaco as an alternative to Marseille for carriers looking to land in Europe with latency and diversity requirements.

“It is exciting to see Gibtelecom’s international business taking off as the company expands its global network of business partners. There is already other EIG business in the pipeline which will cement Gibtelecom’s position as a small but established international communications player,” said Rab Paramothayan, international Director at Gibtelecom.
