VimpelCom selects Huawei to manage Russian network

Russian carrier VimpelCom has selected Chinese equipment vendor Huawei to manage its integrated telecommunications network in a five-year deal.

Huawei will take responsibility for VimpelCom’s multi-vendor and multi-technology fixed and mobile networks, which span the Volga and the Far East.

Full network management including responsibility for maintenance, field operations, network assurance and spare parts is included in the contract.

Over the period an estimated 1,300 VimpelCom employees will be transferred to the vendor.

“The business-model of transferring network operation and exploitation to a third party is a common global trend today and we are glad that we are leading the Russian market in this sphere. We are certain that this large-scale cooperation with Huawei will strengthen our position and help us to achieve our targets," said Anton Kudryashov, head of the Russia business unit and general director of OJSC VimpelCom.

Huawei claims that the agreement will allow VimpelCom to offer better network service quality to customers and benefit from significant improvements in operation and maintenance efficiency of the network, as well as opex reduction.

The partnership marks Huawei’s first managed serviced contract in Russia.
