KPN Belgium to deploy ZTE’s core network solution

KPN’s Belgian subsidiary has selected Chinese vendor ZTE for the deployment of packet switched core network equipment on its infrastructure.

The announcement follows KPN’s failure to sell its Belgian mobile unit BASE earlier this monthafter receiving unsatisfactory offers for the operator.

ZTE’s network solution is designed to support evolution from a 2G/3G packet core to an evolved packet core, allowing operators so support unified 2G, 3G and 4G access.

The vendor claims that its solution will help KPN deliver service differentiation and further enhance the network’s competitive strength.

“KPN and ZTE have a history of successful partnerships cooperating on technologies such as HSPA, core network, etc. The new CN project is another step to enhancing KPN’s overall network performance,” said Tom Poelhekken, CTO at KPN Group Belgium.

“As a leading telecoms operator, KPN has strict requirements for vendor and partner relationships. ZTE meets those requirements by providing highly efficient and innovative solutions to make an effective contribution to improving network performance for the KPN Group,” said Xu Ziyang, VP at ZTE.

The core network contract follows a similar construction project between ZTE and KPN Germany in September 2010.
