Turkcell has opened the doors to its first solar-powered data centre in Ankara, Turkey.

“Our investments in Turkey’s data centres that comply with international standards constantly expands as a part of our wider vision of ‘Turkey’s data should be hosted in Turkey’, said Murat Erkan, CEO, Turkcell. “With our next data centre launch in Corlu scheduled for completion in 2020, Turkcell’s investments will exceed 2 billion TL and further strengthen our leadership position in the market. Our centres will catalyse the continued growth of Turkey’s digital economy with our proven reliability in providing data centre and cloud services

The new facility boasts a total of 12,000sqm of whitespace further strengthening Turkcell’s position in data centres and cloud services, as well as bolstering the digital transformation currently taking place in the country.

“At Turkcell, we integrated sustainable solutions into our core business,” adds Erkan. “We added another first to our track record with our solar panel systems installed at the parking lot of our new data centre. Turkey’s only data centre that utilises electricity produced with solar panels also recycles rainwater to drive less water consumption in the building and in irrigation of green-field.”

The new facility will offer cloud services to public institutions and organisations through Turkcell’s subsidiary, Turkcell Digital Business Solutions.

Earlier this year, Turkcell claimed a world record speed of 2.283Gbps and Turkey’s first 5G signal over its 5G test network using a 5G-compatible smartphone.

The speeds were reached using a smartphone compatible with the allocated 3.5GHz frequency using 1000MHz bandwidth and was carried out in Turkcell’s 5G-field in Istanbul. The trial took place in partnership with Ericsson, with the speed test itself carried out over 3.5Ghz frequency with 3GPP standards compliant 5G-compatible smartphone - Oppo Reno 5G.
