The commission is pushing for a multi-stakeholder governance model for the internet to improve the transparency, accountability and inclusiveness of internet governance, supported by a set of principles.
The paper proposes to establish a timeline for internationalising the US-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which oversees the co-ordination of domain names and IP addresses
"The next two years will be critical in redrawing the global map of internet governance,” said Neelie Kroes, VP at the European Commission. “Europe must contribute to a credible way forward for global internet governance. Europe must play a strong role in defining what the net of the future looks like.”
