Vodafone has announced that it has demonstrated, for the first time in Italy, 4G mobile network speeds of 1.2Gbps and broadband fibre network speeds of 10Gbps, with Huawei technology.

The operator says that 1.2Gbps was only possible in trials after combining all the radio frequencies available today. Achieving 10Gbps on fibre was aided by using 10GPON technology.

Vodafone stated that it is presently investing in exceeding network speeds over 1Gbps as it will open up the potential of more enterprise and consumer applications, particularly in the telemedicine, entertainment, connected cars and smart home sectors.

Today, Vodafone states that over 50% of mobile data on its network are 4G. It also predicts that data usage will increase by 150% from 2015 to 2019.
