DE-CIX Frankfurt and DE-CIX New York have achieved two data records at its respective Internet exchange facilities.

Specifically, DE-CIX Frankfurt reached 11Tbps as of 1 February, while DE-CIX New York now consistently exceeds 1Tbps peak traffic across its platform.

As of February 2020, data throughput at peak times at DE-CIX Frankfurt has increased by over 30%, driven largely by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Not least the current wave of Omicron infections due to the Covid-19 pandemic has been impacting data throughput: People are moving their activities into the home environment, streaming movies and even sporting events, downloading new games and software updates. All of this continues to drive up data traffic and the use of digital services. We at DE-CIX expect further records in the coming weeks and months – not only at our German sites, but also worldwide,” said Dr Thomas King, CTO at DE-CIX.

“In addition, we see that digitalisation has received a boost in demand for data capacity at all levels over the last two years, with and through Covid-19. In particular, large enterprises and stock corporations are adapting their interconnection strategies and specifically seeking consultations and data exchange at and via Internet Exchanges such as DE-CIX.”

DE-CIX New York is currently interconnected to DE-CIX IXs in Chicago, Dallas, and Richmond, with Phoenix due to become ready for service by the end of Q1 2022.

“Neutrality and an open access model are a key contributor to our success, not just in New York but globally,” said Ed d’Agostino, VP and general manager of DE-CIX North America.

“By partnering with data center and transport network operators, not only are we able to extend access to our platform – now having the most points of presence of any IX throughout the greater New York/New Jersey markets – but also regional networks can readily connect.

Across its global platform, DE-CIX handled over 38 exabytes of data throughput in 2021; equivalent to the storage capacity of more than 300 million smartphones, each with 128GB memory.
