Phil Mottram escapes Zayo to join Tarek Robbiati at HPE

Phil Mottram, Zayo’s chief revenue officer since November 2017, has left the company to become a vice president at Hewlett Enterprise (HPE).

Mottram (pictured) will be the global lead for communications and media solutions at HPE, he announced on LinkedIn.

An HPE executive in the UK confirmed the appointment to Capacity, saying: “He’s come into one of the global teams – definitely based in the US.”

Tarek Robbiati, the CFO of HPE since September 2018, worked with Mottram at Telstra International between 2010 and 2012 – Robbiati as group managing director when Mottram was executive director of global sales.

Mottram was later CEO of the Hong Kong mobile operator CSL, a job Robbiati had had in 2007-10. CSL was then part of the Telstra group.

On his return from Hong Kong Mottram, who earlier in his career worked at AT&T, Sprint and BT, became director of Vodafone’s global business unit before the 2017 move to Zayo. At the time, Dan Caruso, chairman and CEO at Zayo, said: “Phil’s extensive global sales and marketing experience in the industry and ability to bring teams together to drive revenue results is precisely what we need to generate sustainable, organic revenue growth.”

Since then, however, Zayo has become the target of activist investors seeking to force Caruso to sell all or part of the company. Last week Capacity reported that Zayo was expecting up to four proposals for deals valuing it at up to $9 billion by the end of this week.

Capacity tried to contact Mottram to ask about his move to HPE – the first time he has worked for a vendor rather than an operator. However he did not reply to a message on LinkedIn and his Zayo-era mobile phone was last connected on 30 March, according to his WhatsApp account.
