Windstream Wholesale has connected its core network to the Telxius-owned MAREA and BRUSA cable landing station in Virginia Beach, offering its customers access to high-speed connections to Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The partnership will see Windstream Wholesale set-up a new access point in order to offer its customers with more domestic and international connectivity options.

It will leverage the MAREA and BRUSA cable systems, both owned by Telefonica offshoot Telxius, to offer low latency domestic transport services to a number of major US hubs, including Miami, New York, Dallas, and LA. This is in addition to Windstream’s existing network, which spans more than 150,000 miles of long-haul fibre.

Internationally, the new access point will provide Windstream Wholesale customers with connections from U.S. locations into Europe, South America and the Caribbean through its collaboration with Telxius over the MAREA and BRUSA subsea cables.

“Windstream is excited to be one of the first U.S. national network operators in the MAREA and BRUSA landing station to provide this new level of connectivity options in Virginia Beach to support even the most aggressive and bandwidth-intensive digital initiatives,” said Joe Scattareggia, president of Windstream Wholesale (pictured).

“Our collaboration with Telxius is laying the foundation to provide customers connectivity and diversity options coast to coast to all of the major peering locations throughout the U.S. and beyond.”

The partnership will utilise two subsea cable systems owned by Telxius – MAREA and BRUSA. The 6,600km MAREA cable opened for business last year linking the US to Spain. The eight fibre pair cable has a design capacity of 160tbps.

BRUSA is an 11,000km cable system connecting Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with Virginia Beach, with branching units in San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Fortaleza (Brazil). It is one of the highest capacity subsea cable to ever connect the Americas offering ultrafast transmission capacity reaching up to 138Tbps.

For the cable landing station in Virginia Beach, where both cables land, Telxius partnered with Equinix to extend backhaul capacity on both cables to the Equinix DC2 International Business Exchange data centre in Ashburn, Virginia.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Windstream at Telxius’ facilities within the Virginia Beach Cable Landing Station as it creates vast new opportunities for wholesale and enterprise customers with international interests,” said Enrique Valdés, VP of Sales, North Region for Telxius.
