McAllen Data Center acquires Verizon data centre in El Paso

McAllen Data Center (MDC) has completed its purchase of a Verizon data centre in the city of El Paso, Texas.

MDC, the carrier-neutral colocation provider, connects all the major Mexican networks in its data centres. This new facility offers over 10,000 square feet of space and 800 kilowatts (kW) of, IT power with additional power available. In addition, the building also features a cell tower and has connectivity to its former owner, Verizon.

Commenting on the news, Juan Salazar, CEO of McAllen Data Center, said: “MDC has experienced increased demand for reliable colo and carrier-neutral interconnection services on the border. El Paso is an important interconnection hub for Mexico and the World. We are very happy to enter this market with the MDC signature of customer centricity, neutrality, and top-notch services.”

MDC say that the new site will offer diversity and additional choice to the colocation market in El Paso, using a unique carrier-neutral model that features redundant access to the company’s fibre crossing solutions that connects El Paso to the city of Juarez, in Mexico.

This new offering is only further strengthened by MDC’s partners such as FiberLight, who are partnering with MDC to build new fibre routes into MDC data centres, including the recently purchased El Paso facility.

MDC first announced its plan to launch a new data centre in El Paso, back in July of last year. At the time, the announcement was part of a wider expansion plan that included the opening of one more data centre in Laredo. The company now has three established locations in McAllen, Laredo, and El Paso, making it the only carrier-neutral provider with presence in the three largest gateways between Mexico and the US.

In October, MDC partnered with Asteroid, to build the first internet exchange point (IXP) in South Texas. The new IXP will leverage Asteroid’s lightweight design and will be located in MDC’s headquarters in McAllen, Texas. As the first IXP on the border, McAllen claims it will create new opportunities for the peering community to grow in Southern Texas and Mexico.

In December, FiberLight welcomed Don MacNeil as its new chief executive officer after being promoted from chief operating officer. MacNeil is said to be taking over the day-to-day running of FiberLight and is focussed on maintaining the company’s culture and values.
