Ericsson and Qualcomm demonstrate LTE-U

Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies are claiming to have demonstrated data transmissions at 300 megabits a second.

The trial claims to move a step closer to enabling unlicensed spectrum normally dedicated to Wifi to be used for 4G mobile services.

The two vendors combined one carrier on licensed spectrum with one carrier on unlicensed spectrum in the trial.

The technology, called LTE-U — for unlicensed — will enable carrier aggregation of licensed with unlicensed bands to address growth in indoor data traffic. Ericsson demonstrated its first LTE-U small cells in early 2015.
