Ciena and Ericsson announce major SDN collaboration

Ciena and Ericsson have signed a strategic global agreement designed to accelerate the adoption of SDN-based open architectures.

Under a collaboration framework, the companies plan to leverage their combined resources to jointly develop and co-market service provider SDN technology. This includes packet-optical distribution, converged IP/optical joint development and distribution.

The move will see Ericsson offer Ciena's Converged Packet Optical portfolio, as well as integrate Ciena’s WaveLogic coherent optical technology into its IP portfolio.

Ciena is said to benefit from Ericsson’s relationships with global service providers and its strong position in mobile infrastructure.

“The strategic agreement combines Ciena’s and Ericsson’s strengths in the development of an open SDN network for converged IP and Optical transport,” said Jan Häglund, VP and head of product area IP & broadband at Ericsson. “The reseller agreement will allow Ericsson to complement our 4th-Generation IP portfolio with Ciena’s industry-leading packet-optical products. This will create an even stronger offering for our customers.”
