Mobile voice and data drive growth in Kenya

The Kenyan telecoms market is expected to reach $1.5 billion by the end of 2011 through growth in the mobile sector.

The Kenyan telecoms market grew by 5.4% in 2010 compared to 2009, according to Pyramid Research. The market is being driven by the increasing revenues in the mobile sector, with the greatest revenue still coming from mobile voice. Mobile voice earned an estimated $941 billion in 2010, representing 66% of total revenues. This figure is expected to decline by 2015, with mobile data and broadband internet gaining a greater percentage of the Kenyan market.

Revenue from mobile data in Kenya is predicted to reach $661 million by 2015, growing from $321 million in 2010. Mobile data will continue to contribute almost 34% of all revenue by the end of the forecasted period.

This increase in mobile data use has been attributed to the adoption of mobile money transfer services within the country, as well as the increased penetration of 3G-based services.
