Connected devices to reach 271 million by 2015

The number of devices with cellular connectivity shipped to consumers worldwide is expected to reach 271 million by 2015.

Research firm Berg Insight reported that over the next five years, shipments of end-user, connected electronic devices (excluding smartphones) is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 65.2%. Between 2009 and 2010, the number of shipped devices doubled from 11 million to 22 million.

The increased popularity of these devices is attributed to the growing use of tablets, e-readers and personal navigational devices. The market for internet tablets took off last year with 17.1 million sold worldwide of which 3.9 million had cellular connectivity. It is predicted that increased consumer awareness, reduced module and chipset prices and the mass deployment of networks such as LTE will continue to have a positive impact on the market.
