Over the past several years, there has been a seismic transition from fixed to mobile voice, according to the Dell’Oro Group. The total fixed-line subscriber base peaked in 2006 at 1.3 billion while the installed base of mobile subscribers has been growing by over one million per day.

Despite this shift, there remains a sizeable market opportunity for NGN equipment as the installed base of fixed lines transitions from circuit to packet-based services. According to Dell’Oro Group’s Carrier IP Telephony Five-Year Forecast report, the wireline NGN market fell 10% in 2008 to $3.3 billion, and is expected to decline further in 2009 before rebounding in 2010 with mid single-digit growth through 2013.
