TeliaSonera launches 100G network in Europe and the US

TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC) claims to have launched the first 100G network that covers both Europe and North America.

The Stockholm-based telecoms giant has reached the speed following an upgrade of their pan-European network..

The European upgrade followed the November 2012 upgrade of the North American service which connected 23 American cities as far west as Los Angeles. This is now complemented by its pan-European 100G network stretching from Madrid to Moscow.

“We own and operate our own global fibre backbone,” said Erik Hallberg, president of TeliaSonera. “This lets us deploy the technology required to build a future-enabled network.

“For our wholesale customers, 100G means the ability to scale up capacity without scaling up complexity – and doing so cost-efficiently,”

TeliaSonera is now looking to upgrade its trans-Atlantic connection to a 100G, and offer “seamless connectivity”, added Hallberg.

TeliaSonera deployed a 100G pan European optical network last July, in a bid to address growing traffic demands in the continent.

The Nordic carrier has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to implement the 100G upgrade.
