Infinera today announced the deployment of its DTN-X packet optical transport platform across Network Rail’s railway infrastructure in the UK.

The platform will enable Network Rail Telecom (NRT), Network Rail’s national telecoms asset management and service provision unit, to upgrade its 16,000km fibre network with speeds of up to 500Gbps.

"We deployed Infinera's solutions to enable a railway fit for the future, providing improved network reliability, scalability and safety for our teams,” said Craig Ellis, head of technology and engineering at NRT.

Last month it was revealed that Network Rail had applied to regulator Ofcom for additional powers to control and extend its fibre network.
