Omantel inks 5G MoU with LG Uplus

Omantel has formed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with LG Uplus Corporation (LG Uplus) to expand its 5G offerings using edge technology.

Omantel was represented by CEO Talal Al Mamari during the signing ceremony which was also attended by Hyeon-sik Hwang, CEO of LG Uplus, in Barcelona.

“Omantel’s 5G footprint is rapidly growing across the Sultanate. We continue to explore areas where the technology is leveraged to create more exciting experiences way beyond high-speed internet," said Aladdin Baitfadhil, acting chief commercial officer at Omantel.

"Innovation underscores this partnership with LG Uplus and we can promise exciting and versatile offerings for our individual and enterprise customers.”

Included within the scope of the MoU is Augmented reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Multiview, Timeslice solution and any potential business cooperation opportunities on XR platforms.

“This MoU will mark the first step to creating valuable 5G business synergies between LG Uplus and Omantel. We hope to bring our high quality XR services to the consumers of Omantel in the near future,” added Hyeon-sik Hwang, CEO of LG Uplus.

In related news, January saw Omantel launch its Innovation Labs, inaugurated its 5G experience centre called the Omantel Innovation Oasis, and E-Dukkan, Middle East’s first unmanned convenience store.

The Omantel Innovation Labs will leverage Omantel's assets and expertise to contribute to Oman’s Vision 2040 and innovate with new and emerging technologies namely 5G, Internet of Things, cybersecurity, customer experience and big data.

While the Omantel Innovation Oasis demonstrates use case of 5G technology among others. It complements the Omantel Innovation Labs as a place where incubated tech start-ups can potentially showcase their innovations in the future. And E-Dukaan at the Omantel HQ is powered by artificial intelligence and IoT.

“The Omantel Innovation Labs are a platform that will channelize the Company’s resources in a way that they are invested in the growth of Oman’s tech entrepreneurial domain," said Talal bin Said Al Mamari, CEO, Omantel.
