ADC opened a new, 10MW facility at its Midrand campus, in Johannesburg in September. Now, the data centre developer and operator has committed to expanding capacity across its operations in Johannesburg to reach 100MW of IT load.
In addition, Africa Data Centres says it plans to expand its hyperscale and enterprise focused data centres at its existing campuses in Midrand and Samrand and is securing land for a third.
“Today’s announcements by Africa Data Centres and our expansion plans, highlights our commitment to accelerating digital transformation in Africa. Growing our data centres footprint is a key part of delivering on our vision of a digitally connected future that leaves no African behind ” added Hardy Pemhiwa the president and CEO of Cassava Technologies, the parent company of ADC and Liquid.
Cassava Technologies, which launched earlier this month, brings together the digital services and infrastructure businesses of Econet, the telecommunications company founded by Zimbabwean tycoon Strive Masiyiwa.
In September the firm said it would more than double its portfolio with 10 hyperscale data centres "across the length and breadth" of Africa – namely South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Morocco and Egypt. Later that same month, the Johannesburg facility opened.
Africa Data Centres has set aside $500m to enable the company more than double its already significant footprint in Africa, which will boost digital transformation on the continent.
Meanwhile, the African Data Centres Association (ADCA) said less than a year ago that the continent requires 700 facilities to meet its growing needs.
