FPT Telecom uses Ciena kit as Vietnam eyes 30% GDP from digital economy
Vietnam's FPT Telecom Joint Stock Company is to deploy hardware and software from Ciena to manage rising residential broadband traffic across the country.
To date, FPT has deployed Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform powered by WaveLogic Ai coherent optics; Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) domain controller' Route Optimization; and Analysis (ROA) from Blue Planet, a division of Ciena.
Additionally, Ciena Professional Services will provide technical expertise to "accelerate the network rollout and assist FPT Telecom engineers in the deployment and operation of the network".
“Delivering fast and reliable connectivity is the foundation of making Vietnam a more connected nation and equips us to play in the international arena,” said Hoang Viet Anh, CEO, FPT Telecom.
“With Ciena’s coherent optical and intelligent software platforms, FPT Telecom delivers more engaging digital experiences and ensures our customers get the most value from new technology trends.”
The country's Ministry of Information and Communications last year declared Vietnam "the fastest-growing digital economy in the Asia Pacific region" and outlined its target for the digital economy to drive 30% of GDP by 2030.
Vietnam's connectivity has shown remarkable progress to date and FPT said the most recent uptick it has seen in demand for services is due to the increasing popularity of entertainment and smart home connectivity.
ITU data showed Vietnam had just over 100,000 dialup internet subscribers at the end of the year 2000. World Bank figures for 2019 show this now stands at around 68.7%, however the figure has seen a decline since 2018, when it reached an all-time high of 70.35%.
FPT's network infrastructure reaches 59 of Vietnam's 63 provinces and the telco was the first to launch FTTH services in Vietnam in. In 2017 it released the highest-speed internet broadband service in the country with the launch of SOC 1Gbps.
Dion Leung, MD for ASEAN, Ciena, added: “FPT Telecom is a prime example of how a network that can adapt and scale is critical to today’s digital culture. This deployment reinforces our ability to deliver award-winning solutions that address total cost of ownership and achieve network transformation goals."
