Jio Platforms saw its average revenue per user (ARPU) increase for the fifth consecutive quarter according to its latest financial results, and further confirmed a 5.3% increase in revenue.

Reporting on the quarter to 31 December, Jio said ARPU during the quarter reached ₹ 151.0 per subscriber per month, compared to ₹ 145.0 in the previous quarter.

Further, the operator posted a 6.4% increase in EBITDA and a 15.5% increase in net profit.

As of 31 December, the customer base stood at 410.8 million, following 5.2 million net additions, while data traffic increased 4%. Average data consumption per user per month over the quarter reached 12.9 GB, compared with 12 GB the previous quarter, while average voice consumption reached 796 minutes per user per month compared to 776 minutes per user the previous quarter.

Jio honoured its commitment and made all domestic voice calls "absolutely free" from 1 January. It earlier assured users that the charge for offnet outgoing calls would continue only till the time TRAI abolished IUC charges.

Wireless gross additions were "robust" at 25.1 million as smartphone shipments improved with easing Covid restrictions across the country.

5G

Seizing the opportunity to update the market on its 5G launch plans, the operator detailed its recent tech achievements.

Last month, RIL boss Mukesh Ambani pledged to launch a 5G network in the country, built using Indian technology, in the second half of calendar year 2021. The country's spectrum auction schedule does not yet support this, but Ambani – and his investors – remain bullish on achieving their ambitions.

The financial results read: "Indigenously developed 5G Radio integrated with Jio’s 5G Core Network and 5G Smartphones to achieve over the air throughputs in excess of 1 Gbps. In-house Massive MIMO and indoor 5G small cell under advanced stages of development."
