DE-CIX in Frankfurt has set a new data throughput record achieving 9.1Tbps earlier this week.

In December 2019, DE-CIX Frankfurt hit the 8Tbps mark, meaning that this new milestone represents an increase of more than 12% over a few months.

“This record confirms that DE-CIX in Frankfurt, and with it the metropolitan region FrankfurtRheinMain, is one of the most important data hubs in the world,” said Dr Thomas King, chief technology officer of DE-CIX.

“Added to this is the fact that as a result of the season, as well as the exceptional situation that people are currently experiencing with the COVID-19 virus, Internet use is playing an ever-greater role.”

“Whether it’s for exchanging information, streaming films, or playing online games. Guaranteeing a stable and secure Internet infrastructure – regardless of how challenging the times are – is one of our highest priorities.”

According to the company, the data traffic at Internet Exchanges fluctuates reflecting the daily rhythm of Internet usage, beginning at 6am and reaching its peak at around 9 in the evening. It is also impacted by seasonal changes, for example, in the summer people are online less then in the autumn and winter months, which of course, affects traffic.

Earlier this week, DE-CIX deployed a point of presence (PoP) at NJFX, expanding its reach into the Latin American market.

The company revealed that its goal is to make Latin America one of the focus regions for networks to be connected via NJFX to DE-CIX New Yor
