Sojitz Corporation, NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), NEC Corporation and NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation (NESIC) will carry out an infrastructure upgrade in Myanmar.

The plans come under official instruction from Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, the country’s incumbent telecoms operator and once completed, will connect the cities of Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay and Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Due to rapid economic growth in Myanmar, the penetration of mobile phone now exceeds 90% but a lack in capacity as well as IP addresses, the country now urgently requires this upgrade in order to maximise these opportunities.

NTT Com and NEC already has communication infrastructure in use in Myanmar, such as LTE base stations, international internet connection facilities and a core communication network connecting Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay. Under the terms of the project, Sojitz will act as the principal contractor of the project responsible for the overall management of the upgrade leveraging its global expertise in similar projects.

For its part NTT Com will use its technological capabilities in upgrading international internet connection facilities to a maximum capacity of 800Gbps.It will also resolve the lack of IP address with the introduction of IPv6 technologies.

NEC will provide the optical communication equipment for the core communication network to expand transmission capacity to 1Tbps. Its optical communication equipment will multiplex multiple signals of different wavelengths and transmit them via optical fibre.

Lastly NESIC, in collaboration with its subsidiary NESIC Thailand, will install DWDM (equipment supplied by NEC and carry out design, civil work and installation works of the optical cable network that sits at a total cable length of 180km in Yangon and Thilawa SEZ.
