The 800G Pluggable MSA group defines ultra-wideband 800Gbps rate optical interface specifications for future data centres, extends the advantages of pluggable modules, and doubles the data interconnection bandwidth capability without any changes to the data centre network (DCN) architecture.
The targeted data centre optical interconnection solution will meet the requirements of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and 5G to increase data traffic.
In the foreseeable year 2025, the annual data storage volume will reach 180ZB. Most of this data will be exchanged within the data centre. Meeting the bandwidth, cost, and power consumption requirements of data transmission and achieving a smooth evolution will be a common industry challenge.
The 800G pluggable optical modules MSA group promotes a joint industry exchange and collaboration between data centre operators and vendors of infrastructure equipment, optical modules, optoelectronic chips, and connectors.
It focuses on the data centre network interconnection scenario, targeting to determine the optimal interconnect architecture, define interface specifications of the 800G pluggable optical modules, build an industry chain ecosystem, and guide a healthy development of the industry.
“Our LightCounting forecast model indicates that operators of cloud data centres will need to deploy 800G optics by 2023-24 to keep up with the growth of data traffic,” stated founder and CEO of LightCounting Market Research, Vladimir Kozlov PhD.
“Most of 800G will be still pluggable transceivers, but we expect to see some implementation of co-packaged optics as well.”
Lewis Zhang, chief photoelectric expert of Huawei Datacom Product Lin, said: “800Gbps will be a very important rate node. We believe that the entire industry will benefit from the collaboration to find the optimal module architectures and technical solutions.”
Dr Zhang Hua, technology expert of Hisense broadband, a leading optical module vendor, said: “Datacom 800Gbps adopts direct detection technology to meet the low cost requirements of typical DCN use cases. It will continue to be advantageous in the fields of cost and power consumption. The industry needs to focus on customer requirements and increase its investment.”
The 800G pluggable optical modules MSA group is open to all companies and organisations.
