KCOM to appoint ex-BT exec Sutherland as new CEO

KCOM, the UK-based broadband and IT service provider, will appoint Graham Sutherland, the former BT business group executive.

According to Techmarketview Sutherland will be appointed sometime next week and aligns itself with the company’s FY18 results, which highlighted a number of challenges the company is facing particularly on the enterprise side as it looks to increase its revenue share from managed services and cloud hosting deals.

Sutherland left BT back in May after the company announced that it would merge its business and wholesale divisions. Current wholesale boss Gerry McQuade will lead the newly combined unit called BT Enterprise.

Sutherland has numerous years of telecoms experience in the UK market, prior to joining BT he served as managing director of NTL Ireland of Virgin Media between 2002 and 2010.

In his new role Sutherland will be tasked with devising a strategic transformation at KCOM in order drive improved financial and operational performance.

The current KCOM CEO Bill Halbert will stay on during the transitional period.

In related news, BT-owned mobile operator EE has become the first UK telco to launch a 5G trial site, ahead of wider rollouts planned ahead.

EE has launched a live 5G trial at Canary Wharf in London, a site visited by around 150,000 people every day. The trial will test 5G spectrum and devices for performance, speed and coverage.
