Gilat Telecom, formerly known as Gilat Satcom, has been chosen by Cameroon’s Nextell to provide 4G broadband services in Cameroon.

Nextell, which has been operational in Cameroon since 2015 and is part of the Viettel group of operators, has a customer base of approximately five million and is now the third largest operator in Cameroon, after Orange and MTN. It will be using Gilat Telecom’s fibre network both within Cameroon and across Africa to provide a fast and reliable broadband service to its customers.

“Demand for mobile broadband services is very high in Cameroon as, of course, people want to be able to access online services from their phone over a reliable and fast network,” said Dan Zajicek, CEO of Gilat Telecom.

“We are investing heavily in our infrastructure across Africa and this is enabling us to win large customers like Nextell. We will continue to play a major part in Africa’s digital transformation.”

Gilat Telecom was chosen after a competitive tender that included a number of established wholesale carriers in Africa and says its “excellent customer service and extremely high SLAs” made them stand out from the competition.

As well as its established and well-regarded wholesale business, Gilat Telecom has built data centers across Africa with both public cloud and its own service-as-you-go cloud services supported in its PoPs in Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia. It also operates successful ISPs in Uganda and Zambia.
