Telia Carrier has expanded the reach of its global backbone in the Asia Pacific region by launching a new point of presence in Tokyo, Japan.

The new PoP will see Telia’s network offer support for high-speed IP transit, cloud connect, Ethernet, and IPX services for operators, consumers and enterprises in Japan and across the rest of the region.

The APAC region is in the midst of a significant increase in internet traffic, according to figures from Statista. Take, for example, the data volume of consumer internet traffic in the region, which the analyst firm predicts will top 74,419PB per month by 2021 – up from just over 20,000PB per months in 2016.

Japan, with around 118 million internet users according to Statista’s 2018 figures, is ranked sixth among countries with the highest number of internet users as of December 2017. It is fourth in the region, behind China, India and Indonesia, and 8th globally by average speed.

“Our PoP in Japan will further open up the local market and enhance connectivity across the APAC region as a whole. It will also provide customers with the option of a low latency route towards Europe on our leading global IP backbone,” says Wee Kwan Ee, head of sales APAC, Telia Carrier.

It is the latest expansion for Telia Carrier’s backbone, which connects more than 265 PoPS with 65,000km of fibre spanning Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East. Telia has just celebrated the 25th birthday of the AS1299 backbone, which carries 12 billion voice minutes a year and is the top ranked IP backbone, according to Dyn Research.

Recently launched PoPs include an expansion into Mexico, a new PoP - its first - in Serbia and additional presence in the NaMeX data centre in the heart of Italian city Rome.

Staffan Göjeryd, CEO, Telia Carrier, said: “Japan is a country which consumes and creates vast amounts of Internet content and with many of its businesses at the cutting edge of technology, there is a compelling need for reliable and scalable connectivity to connect a global network of customers and partners. Japan is the latest chapter in our organic growth story and follows recent geographical expansion into new markets such as Mexico and Serbia.”
