Telenor’s new head of Myanmar has taken the reigns at the business unit as it unveils plans to expand LTE coverage in the Asian country.

Telenor announced an overhaul of its management teams in Myanmar and Thailand in June, with Sharad Mehrotra coming in as CEO of Telenor Myanmar and Alexandra Reich coming in as CEO of DTAC.

Mehrotra has now begun his new position in Myanmar, having previously served as CEO of Telenor India, which is now being acquired by Airtel as part of the ongoing consolidation in the Indian telecoms sector.

Mehrotra joined Telenor ten years ago as part of the core management team launching operations in India. He has also served in Bangkok, but notably had experience in Myanmar too, having served as the first CMO after Telenor launched its operations there in 2013.

Other companies on Mehrotra’s CV include the likes of Aircel, Ericsson, and BPL Telecom in India. He replaces Lars Erik Tellman, who has been appointed to a senior position in Telenor’s emerging Asia cluster supporting management, partnerships and business development of the cluster.

Telenor’s group CEO Sigve Brekke said: "Being able to utilise expertise and hands-on experience across markets is among the great advantages of having strong positions in both Scandinavia and Asia. We rely on managers and experts who dare to step out of their comfort zone and take on challenges where they can learn and develop."

It comes as Telenor Myanmar announced plans to expand its LTE network to cover more than 250 townships across the Asian nation by the end of the year. It currently covers around 180.

Telenor launched LTE services in Mynmar in June last year and now boasts more than 19 million combined 3G and 4G customers, covered by more than 8,000 cell sites.

“As part of our commitment to provide the best customer experience throughout Myanmar, we have rolled out our 4G network across all states and regions in order to offer the superior data experience to the customers,” Telenor Myanmar CMO Amaresh Kumar said.

Network testing firm recently named Ooredoo’s mobile network as the fastest 4G network in Myanmar with an average of 38.2Mbps for downloads and 20.65Mbps for uploads.
