The NBN transcontinental optical transport backbone, known as the Transit Network, is a 60,000km fibre backbone originally built using Coriant's hiT 7300 Packet Optical Transport Platform.
Introducing the CloudWave Optics technology will give NBN per-wavelength transmission speeds of 200G and beyong, Coriant said, allowing it to improve utilisation of existing fibres by over 50%.
The upgrade will help NBN boosts Capacity on the Transit Network to 45Tbps per fibre link, whilst also reducing capex and opex by reducing its footprint and improving throughput density.

NBN is in the process of building a new and upgraded, fast wholesale broadband network, with the aim of connecting 8 million homes and businesses by 2020 with faster broadband.
Deployment of the Coriant flexi-rate solution, which is scheduled to begin in 2017, will target high-traffic routes within the nationwide nbn backbone network, with the first upgrades set to take place in Sydney and Melbourne
Earlier this year has begun installing new hybrid cables in some Australian suburbs as part of the roll-out of faster connectivity, according to reports. NBN is installing hybrid fibre coax (HFC) in order to ensure each area with a roll-out uses the same technology where possible.
