China Unicom Global seals trio of IPX direct-connection deals

China Unicom Global (CUG) has respectively signed IPX direct-connection bilateral agreements with PCCW Global, Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) and Chunghwa Telecom.

Direct IPX peering between CUG and the partners' respective IPX networks will expand China Unicom’s mobile roaming coverage, making CUG IPX a critical platform for CUG international roaming data exchange.

Yuerui Ma, executive vice president of CUG, said CUG would like to jointly promote direct-connection among mobile networks in Asia-Pacific by using IPX direct-connection, and provide faster, stabler and more secure international roaming services for mobile customers.

These services include 3G & LTE voice, data roaming, voice transport as well as advanced IP-based services, such as VoLTE, HD video call and video conference.

As a result of the peering agreement that brings together and interconnects HGC Hutch-IPX and CUG IPX, HGC's service provider and mobile network operator (MNO) customers can now extend services to CUG's 260-plus million mobile users. This means HGC Hutch-IPX now reaches more than one billion mobile users in mainland China. 

MNOs and carriers served by both parties will be able to extend coverage to provide multinational and consumer customers with high-quality integrated services.

Andrew Kwok, president of international and carrier business at Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited, said: "This collaboration enables HGC to extend its IPX network connectivity in mainland China. Today's peering agreement news - along with the opportunities it creates, plus existing interconnect arrangements with other mainland China players - opens up the potential for us to reach a total of more than one billion mobile users. We believe this demonstrates that our group-to-group peering strategy to extend the Hutch IPX platform into various geographies is working well."
