Curaçao approves Digicel’s purchase of fixed-line operator

The government and regulatory authorities of Curaçao have approved Digicel’s planned takeover of Tres Networks, the Caribbean island’s fixed and international operator.

Digicel – which already has a mobile network on the island – has not disclosed its purchase price for the operator, which has four switching centres and an all-fibre network covering Curaçao, which is an autonomous part of the Netherlands with a population of under 150,000.

John Suranyi, CEO of Digicel Play for the Caribbean and Central America, said: “As always, our emphasis is on ensuring that our customers benefit from the best services and the latest innovation, so we are looking forward to forging ahead with plans to expand our suite of products and services for our customers in Curacao.”

Frank de Fremery, CEO of Tres Networks, said the takeover will allow the company to expand its fibre-to-the-home network across the island. “This does not only enable more people to enjoy the highest quality internet, TV and telephony services but also to enjoy it at the fastest speeds available on the island.”

Tres Networks is a fixed and international long distance telecommunications operator and distributor of digital television and entertainment services. It provides residential and business customers with high-speed internet, voice and digital services over the island’s only 100% fibre network.

Suranyi added: “Digicel is already investing heavily in increasing the capacity of our service as we continue to evolve into a total communications and entertainment provider – and the acquisition of Tres Networks will provide the framework to broaden that even further, growing our business, creating more jobs and investing in the future of Curacao’s communications industry.”

Digicel has operations in 33 markets in the Caribbean, Central America and the Asia Pacific. It is privately owned by Irish businessman Denis O’Brien.
