Spanish watchdog fines Telefonica

Spanish anti-trust watchdog Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) has fined Telefonica €5 million for non-compliance of regulation for renting its broadband connections to competitors, Reuters reports.

Cable networks in Spain are required to share their infrastructure with competitors at regulated rates and under terms set by the CNMC, but Telefonica has allegedly been defying this regulation for four years.

The CNMC has accused Telefonica of applying charges and clauses in the rental of Ethernet circuits above those established by the regulators.

Telefonica was fined €500,000 for competition breaches in February 2014 and later in July 2014, the European Union said it was upholding a €152 million fine from the company for exploiting its position in the Spanish broadband market.
