SK Telecom and China Unicom to collaborate on 5G

SK Telecom and China Unicom have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on business and technology developments.

Under the agreement, the two companies plan to share information and conduct joint studies to drive the standardisation and commercialisation of next-generation mobile technologies such as 5G.

They have also agreed to establish a joint startup incubator programme and to launch competitive roaming services aimed at tourists. According to the Korea Tourism Organisation, 6.1 million Chinese visited South Korea and 4.2 million Koreans visited China in 2014.

“The understanding means SK Telecom and China Unicom will be able to offer differentiated and innovative services to customers,” said Jang Dong-hyun, CEO of SK Telecom.

“We will continue to make efforts to develop new joint business opportunities,” added Jang. “This will grow both companies and contribute to the economic development of Korea and China.”
