Ex-TeliaSonera CEO considered bribery suspect

Lars Nyberg, former TeliaSonera CEO, is under suspicion of being an accessory to bribery over the operator’s dealings in Uzbekistan, according to local reports.

TeliaSonera admitted in April 2014 that some of its activities in Uzbekistan could have been criminal, and Nyberg has now been added to the list of bribery suspects.

Chief Prosecutor Gunnar Stetlar confirmed to reporters this week that Nyberg had been questioned in the investigation. He could face prison if convicted.

Nyberg, who stepped down from his position in 2013, allegedly said in a text message to Swedish television SVT: “I was placed under suspicion of accessory to bribery over a year ago”.

Corruption allegations were made as a results of an acquisition by TeliaSonera in 2007 to enter the Uzbek market, believed to have proceeded thanks to $320 million in bribes to the daughter of the Uzbekistani president.
